“In my garden, on a still morning in May, something so visually captivating takes me by surprise and compels me to paint.
That something is the intoxicating internal glow of a poppy. In an instant, I am seduced by what seems to be an apparently intuitive attraction, a facility I partly rely on for decision making in addition to my years of experience, knowledge and ability to analyse the visual elements.
At a glance I see an irresistible combination of colour which I know will allow my exploration of subtle shifts and nuances of temperature and encourage a dialogue with the viewer where they can experience my passion for watercolour and my complete obsession for accurately scrutinising and recording these unique moments in time.
Recognising that capturing it would pose me significant technical painting challenges only enhances my determination to capture that morning light as it gently caresses the tactile surface of the protective casing, a striking contrast to the fragility of the paper-thin petals.”
Fiona Strickland, February 2024

A Postgraduate alumnus of the prestigious Edinburgh College of Art, Fiona Strickland is a world-renowned botanical artist and recipient of multiple awards, including the ASBA Diane Bouchier Award for Excellence. Her distinctively individual and creative approach to painting challenges perceptions of botanical subjects, aiming to engage and surprise viewers. Using watercolour on Fabriano Artistico HP 640gsm paper and Kelmscott vellum, Fiona's technical virtuosity shines through her application of multiple transparent watercolour layers, revealing her passion for intense colour and meticulous attention to detail. As an R.H.S. Gold Medalist, ‘Best in Show’ recipient of the American Society of Botanical Artists, and multi award recipient of the Society of Botanical Artists, her exceptional artwork is included in the collections of Dr. Shirley Sherwood O.B.E., the R.H.S Lindley Library, the Hunt Institute for Botanical Documentation, and numerous private collections worldwide.
