This collection of paintings from Nicholas Turner represents some of his works that were created outdoors in pochade boxes, some of which he has used for over thirty years. The show, titled ‘Out of the box’, highlights how these outdoor sessions have consistently inspired his studio work: ‘most ideas have their beginnings in these outdoor experiences. They more often than not influence my time spent in the studio’.
Painting outdoors with a small pochade box allows Nicholas a direct conversation with the landscape. His ‘en plein air’ paintings are often later modified in the studio and gradually reworked, his hope is that a quiet voice from these moments and original exchanges comes through. This process mirrors the unpredictable journey of painting. Nicholas says, ‘I’ve always leaned towards capturing an essence of an experience, rather than simply reproducing it’.
