"The story begins with the Dragon Vase. I have no idea of its provenance but have always been fascinated by the golden image on its green background. It appears in a number of my paintings.
The apple blossom and other flowers I picked from branches overhanging a garden fence as I walked around the neighbourhood.
Vase, flowers and leaves now came together, and I started a drawing. The composition grew. I added the trailing stem of clematis to meet the upward movement of the pink flowers.
I now had the natural elements and patterns I needed. I started painting.
To contrast with the curving shapes and rhythms of the flowers, stems and leaves, I have emphasised the creases and folds of the cloth, with their sharp lines, angles and geometry. Fragments of wallpaper provide additional sharp, linear patterns.
The geometric structure of a painting is very important to me. Here, I want the intricate details of the still life, shadows and patterns to be balanced by the uninterrupted area of the wall.
The relationship between two- and three-dimensional space is a constant exploration. To cite a detail: here, I have played with ambiguity and implied space in the vertical crease line which continues from the horizontal plane of the cloth into the vertical of the wallpaper fragment behind.
Echoes - why this title? It emerged from the increasingly delicate, ‘whispering’ shadows of the clematis and the gradual fading out of the wallpaper pattern. Like echoes, the images repeat and fade."
Susan Angharad Williams, March 2024

Susan Angharad Williams, based in Kent, studied at the Bath Academy of Art and completed her Fine Art Master’s at the Royal College of Art in 1969. Her notable achievements include winning the Drawing Prize at the Royal College, and the ING Purchase Prize at the Discerning Eye Exhibition in 2007 (Mall Galleries, London), leading to a solo show at the ING Bank Headquarters in 2008. Her artwork is showcased in prominent public collections. She has had two solo shows with Jonathan Cooper as well as several mixed exhibitions in Britain and internationally.
Susan Angharad Williams' artwork beautifully portrays the elegance of natural forms such as flowers, seed pods, and treasured objects she has collected over time, exploring the relationship and tension between objects and the geometry of composition.
